Chapter Eighteen

Anemone

Hopping into the truck after changing into clean clothes, I’m hopeful the information we got out of Denise is enough to be helpful. We need to find a Scotsman with the last name Campbell that is fairly new to the area. He operates out of Valor’s Peak and runs a whorehouse.

Denise gave us a handful of new locations to check out for Edge. A couple of houses and two abandoned farmhouses. That’s the trouble with living in rural Manitoba. There’s too many off the grid places where you can disappear to. Denise, even though she’d been at both farms, wasn’t sure of their exact locations, but gave us enough to start searching. If Edge still has Willow, hopefully he’s got her stashed at one of the farms.

I know we’re going to find Willow soon. I can just feel it. Potter, who’s driving us back to the farm, turns to me once I’m buckled in. “Do you want to talk about what happened with Gabe?”

My muscles tighten up involuntarily and my fists clench in my lap. “I’m not sure what to say.” I glance over at Potter. “He made me doubt myself. He looked at me like I was some kind of monster.” I turn my gaze to the group of men that have already begun cleanup of the cabin. Dom called in some of his most trusted members to help.

Potter puts the truck in gear and turns us around in the small clearing before taking the old dirt road back toward home. “I’m sure he didn’t mean it, but I understand why you’re hurt. Some people just aren’t built for violence. After you’ve both calmed down, you should sit down and talk it over with him. I’m sure he’s beating himself up over the whole thing.”

“All I want to do is get home, shower, and hug Cassie. I’ll worry about the Gabe situation when I’ve had some time to think,” I say.

Potter slams on the breaks and we skid to a stop. “Get Dom on the phone. Now Nem!”

Without questioning why, I grab my cell and hit the dial button on Dom’s name and hand Potter the phone when it starts to ring. Potter jumps out of the truck, and I follow suit.

My eyes see something my brain cannot comprehend. I stand in muted shock.

“Hurry, Dom! It’s bad!”

Potter’s urgency wakes me up and I run toward the edge of the road. I begin to scramble down the bank of the ravine.

“Nem. Dang it, just wait!” Potter then yells into the phone, “Yeah, I’m sure, Dom. That’s Gabe’s truck. Get here fast!”

I fall on my ass, put my hand down to push myself up, and feel a slight sting on my palm. Something crunches under my shoes, causing me to glance down. There’s broken glass scattered all over the ground.

“Gabe!” I jump up and keep going. “Answer me!”

“Nem! I’m coming,” Potter yells from behind me. “Please, just wait.”

I fall against the side of his truck. The box of the truck is destroyed, crumpled up like an accordion.
